Kenya

Established 2020

Background

Mfangano Island was identified as the focus of the Kenya Lighthouse and is a very remote island located in Lake Victoria on the eastern side. Accessible only by boat, the island has a population of 30,000 people and is one of the most HIV impacted regions on the planet. Due to a lack of resources, opportunities, and single-parent households due to men dying early from HIV, many women resort to 'sex for fish' and sacrifice their bodies to provide for their families.

Watts Involvement

In 2020, the Kenya Lighthouse was launched and brought light and hope to Mfangano island amidst the global Covid-19 pandemic. With our solar lights, women are given the opportunity to provide for their families with dignity. Identity and purpose are restored. Women can work later to provide more income for their families. Children can study longer and have access to more opportunity. Hope is renewed.

Total Impact
Since 2020, the total impact in Kenya is:

  • 3,750
    lights distributed

  • 26,250
    lives impacted

  • $581,250
    saved per year

  • 8,212,500
    productivity hours gained per year

  • 900,000
study time hours gained per year

  • 1,650,000
    pounds less of CO2 emissions

Our Partners & Trainers

Our partner Africa for SDGs has championed our mission and identified regions that are most in need of solar lights and financial literacy training in Kenya. They share our value of youth development and have identified and trained a local team of trainers in the Watts of Love Way.

They vary in age, gender, language, and ability and aim to build relationships with ALL light recipients and empower ALL individuals who may not otherwise have an opportunity. We’re so grateful for their partnership.

How to Support

It is because of your generosity that we can bring MORE lights to MORE people through our Lighthouse model serving the most remote and impoverished areas. Together, we improved the lives of others tremendously by bringing light, hope, and empowerment. It is amazing the power one sustainable innovation holds to lift families out of the darkness of poverty.
