Nkhotakota, Malawi

Established 2019

History

The Nkhotakota District is in central Malawi, bordering Lake Malawi’s west side. It is home to many small-scale fishermen and farmers of rice, cassava, and maize. Due to a lack of resources, people living in these communities have been forced to rely on cutting down trees for firewood or cheap batteries to light their homes. Elephants are a risk here, often destroying homes and crops at night in search of food.

Watts Involvement

Watts of Love launched the very first Lighthouse in Nkhotakota in 2019 and found immediate success. Light recipients found the solar light strobe setting scares away elephants and keeps their communities and crops safe. Women formed financial accountability groups and weave together at night using their solar lights. Animals were purchased. Businesses were started. Local people were given a rare opportunity to become leaders and Watts of Love trainers.

Our Partners & Trainers

Our great partnership with the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle has allowed this Lighthouse to thrive and multiply. Due to their success, vision, and connections, additional Lighthouses are forming in other regions of Malawi. They have trained a team of local trainers that vary in age, gender, language, and ability to build relationships with ALL light recipients and empower ALL individuals. We are so grateful for their partnership.
